Meet Patrick Hyland

"Throughout my 20-year journey in agriculture and farm management, I've learned that honesty, hard work, integrity, and empathy are the cornerstones of success. By coupling these values with a commitment to education, I've been able to lead and inspire others, ensuring that every endeavor not only thrives but also contributes to the greater good of our community and the environment."

With over 20 years of diverse experience in agriculture and farm management, I have built a career marked by significant achievements and the rewarding balance of professional growth and family life. My journey began at Longernong College, where I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture and Farming, laying a solid foundation for my future endeavors. Growing up on a family Thoroughbred Racing Property, I naturally transitioned into Horse Management across various Stud Farms.

Throughout my career, I have held senior management roles in essential areas of farm management, including cropping, whole farm planning, and both merino and crossbred sheep enterprise production focused on wool and prime lamb. My expertise also extends to beef cattle enterprise, pasture improvement, farm machinery maintenance, and property upkeep, with a keen focus on presentation and strategic water management. Managing prestigious properties like Banongill Station and Lal Lal Estate has been a highlight of my career.

In 2018, I earned a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, which led to my role at Federation University, where I head the Agriculture and Horticulture program at Langi Kal Kal and Avoca Prisons. My teaching career further advanced with an invitation to teach Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses at Federation University.

Additionally, I have provided consultancy and hands-on property management support to various farms in the region. This consultancy work keeps me closely connected to fieldwork, allowing my students to benefit from practical, real-world case studies.

My current role represents a significant advancement in my career, blending extensive farm management expertise with a modern, sustainability-focused approach to agriculture. This position highlights the integration of a working farm with tourism and business management, emphasizing critical success factors in today’s agricultural landscape.

Leading this project from inception, I developed and executed a strategic plan grounded in a clear vision and stakeholder input. Over the past 24 months, the strategy's successful implementation—consistently within budget and adhering to sustainable practices—has delivered outstanding results. This experience serves as an ideal case study for modern agricultural students, covering all aspects of farm management, best agricultural practices, sustainability, and business and tourism management.
